Core Values

The Society for Wilderness Stewardship is dedicated to advancing the professions of wilderness stewardship, science, and education to ensure the life-sustaining benefits of wilderness.  The excellence that we promote is rooted in the values that we as an organization embody. These values are:

  • Public Trust - We believe that through the Wilderness Act of 1964,Congress secured for the American people of present and future generations the benefits of an enduring resource of wilderness.  We are committed to honor the public trust by adhering to both the spirit and intent of that law.

  • Professional Excellence - We believe that the National Wilderness Preservation System deserves the highest, most professional level of care possible.  We are committed to continuous improvement of our personal knowledge and skills and to perform only those services for which we are qualified.

  • Sound Science - We believe that sound science is the foundation of effective wilderness stewardship.  We are committed to using state-of-the-art science to inform wilderness policy and management decisions.

  • Collaboration and Community - We believe that effective wilderness stewardship transcends disciplines and agency and non-agency boundaries.  We are committed to collaborating with and developing community among like-minded researchers, managers, educators, government and private conservation workers, volunteers, students, the public, and commercial and institutional organizations to address wilderness stewardship issues.

  • Honest Communication - We believe that honest and forthright communication of issues, needs, and information about wilderness is essential.  We are committed to always presenting accurate and complete information; to fully disclose and resolve existing or potential conflicts of interest; and, to challenge and correct misinformation about wilderness.

  • Peer Support - We believe that as members of a professional society we share a commitment to advancing knowledge, standards, and support for our community.
